Something was up. Suddenly Bishop was leaving before me for seven am 'finance' meetings, often not getting home until after nine. Then, one afternoon, as I was pretending to review some shit, Betty, his secretary, had prepared, Bishop walked out of the directors meeting, all gray and tired looking, and gestured for me to come over.

He was out.

And that meant his pretty, overpriced, under-worked assistant, too.

It wasn't until a few days later that I found out what all that really meant—to us—to me. You see, everything—from the condo to the cars, including those antique cars stowed in Jersey, to the place on Fire Island and the condo in Lauderdale, everything down to the projection TVs and the diamond studded watches—everything had been bought on credit. Whatever else Bishop had, had been blown on those fancy vacations and dinners and imported suits. Now all of it, all of it would soon be gone.

Gone.

Bishop was broke.

And what was his game plan, until he found another six figure job with bonuses on the Street at, Christ, age fifty?

Move in with Mother Mildred in Port Jervis, light years away from the city on the fringe of upstate New York, that's what.

The last thing I wanted to do was leave Manhattan and Hylan and for a moment there I thought us two surfer boys could just run away on our own and make a go of it. Bishop must have known I was thinking of jumping ship because that same night he came to my bedroom and crawled into bed beside me, something he hadn't done in months.

"Look, I know it doesn't sound like much now, but I'm leaving everything to you, Josh. This thing with us moving in with Mom is temporary. I know I'll be back on top in no time."

"But I don't think she—Mildred—wants me around," I replied.

Bishop moved in closer so his hairy leg hit mine.

"It's not for her to say."
